The Barfiya Lal Juwantha Government Post Graduate College, Purola, Uttarkashi, is located between the Kamal-Ganga and Mal-Ganga rivers in the Uttarkashi district's development block.
It was established under government order number 5185/28-02-1993-5/60/91, dated October 16, 1993.
The college officially opened as a government institution in Purola, offering programs in the Science department.
The initial faculty included a Principal, five professors, and four non-teaching staff members. The college is situated at a distance of 125 kilometers from the district headquarters, 01 kilometer from Purola development block, 05 kilometers from Purola tehsil, and 150 kilometers from the Dehradun railway station. Its elevation is 1524 meters above sea level. Geographically, Purola is located at latitude 30.8788542 and longitude 78.0851607 on the map of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, India.
Since its inception, the college has been affiliated with H.N.B. Garhwal University, Srinagar, and has offered courses in various subjects within the Science department, including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Zoology, and Botany.
In 2012, the college received government order (1357/xxiv(7) -262/2008/शिक्षा अनुभाग-7) dated August 09, 2010, allowing it to offer undergraduate courses in Hindi, English, Sociology, Economics, Education, History, and Political Science within the Arts department.
Additionally, in 2019, another government order (117/xxiv(7)/2019-23(06) 2010. शिक्षा अनुभाग-7) dated June 13, 2019, permitted the commencement of postgraduate classes in Chemistry, Zoology, and Botany, along with the approval for one laboratory and two positions for outsourcing.
In 2021, the college received a government order (995/xxiv-c-2/2021/11(06)2021, dated October 14, 2021) authorizing the addition of two more positions in the Arts department, specifically in Hindi and English, at the postgraduate level.
Presently, the college has a total of 35 sanctioned staff positions, including the Principal, Professors, and non-teaching staff members. The current staff composition consists of 1 Principal, 12 regular Professors, 03 Guest Teachers, 03 Laboratory Assistants, 01 Chief Administrative Officer, 02 Clerical staff members, and 08 employees under outsourcing.
The college has shown continuous progress since its establishment. It offers various facilities, including furnished rooms for both students and staff, an office, an examination hall, a library, and a computer lab with internet access. The college library houses approximately 10,600 books and provides ICT-based learning opportunities.
To support the holistic development of students, the college provides facilities such as NSS (National Service Scheme), Rover-Ranger programs, a Career Counseling Cell, and departmental councils.
The college received a generous land donation of 2.730 hectares (27,300 square meters) from the residents of Kurda village for educational development.
In 2003, the college was renamed in honor of the late Parvatiya Vikas Mantri Barfia Lal Juwantha, as per a government order (2/उच्च शिक्षा/2002) dated January 08, 2003.
In 2022, the college proposed the addition of five new subjects—Geography, Sanskrit, Home Science, Music, and Fine Arts—as well as the construction of a building for the Arts department, a library, and an auditorium hall. This proposal was submitted to the government for approval.
